SCENE STUDY

FOR FILM & TV

PART-TIME TRAINING FOR ADULTS

STAGEPLAY

VERSUS

SCREENPLAY

WHICH WILL YOU TACKLE FIRST?

SEE BELOW FOR THE BENEFITS TO BOTH

An ongoing, continuous study in 6-week cycles. Scene Study is meant to give you the opportunity to grow as an actor through partner work, character development, and in-depth text analysis. Your scene selection and instruction will be tailored to your level of progression.

Chris Evans and Michael Cera working their on-stage magic in Kenneth Lonergon's 'Lobby Hero' on Broadway, directed by Trip Cullman.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen making us laugh while breaking our hearts in 50/50, directed by Jonathon Levin.

WORDS, WORDS! WORDS.

There are no close-ups. The person in the last row needs to know the same as the person in the second. Can you surmount it?

SILENT, TILL YOU'RE NOT.

Film & TV are built on reaction as much as action.  Screenplays have it all on the page but it isn't all spoken. You won't find it, till you do the work.

We will be using Contemporary Theatre Plays (1960s - Present) to dig into the work as you, the actor, are responsible for clear story telling from beginning to end. The focus will be on analyzing story, setting stakes, discovering objective, exploring tactics, and creating - or in some cases, reinventing - character.

With Screenplays, the emphasis will be on learning to trust one's instincts in order to become a humble conduit to story itself. We'll explore set etiquette, blocking, and performance (scene analysis, emotional preparation, character), and demystify the process itself through rigorous table work and the step by step rehearsal.

To get the most bang for your buck, it's best to focus on what you're looking to accomplish.

THE EXTRAS

BLOCKING

Rehearsal is a time to explore... sort of.

Many times you'll be given blocking by a director

and it's your job to make it a reasonable tactic.

CONSISTENCY

MAKES A SHOT

We're taught to 'live in the moment', 'listen then react' which is great until the Master has been shot. Now it's time for coverage. Do what you did.

TEMPO

RELATIONSHIP

Connection with your partner

is focussed on grounding.

Rhythm is used to guide the actors

and the audience through scenes.

  • Want to Audit? Sure. Be prepared to jump in and get to work, we don't believe in audiences.

  • Each class is taught by a Regular Instructor, but as all of our instructors are working actors, there will be opportunities for Guest Instructors to jump in and teach!

  • We send out Weekly Homework Emails to keep you in the loop and materials will be assigned accordingly. Please note that the emails can be sent a week before or up to the night before the day of class. This is to have actors practice working in real time. Auditions come sporadically so no time to prepare like the present!

  • Each actor works differently and our goal is to pass forward Safe Techniques that the actor can explore to see if it works for them as an individual, in a supportive environment.
    We Do Not teach Substitution.

  • Catch Up System: If an actor has to miss a class, there is a possibility of scheduling a (semi)private catch up session. In the session, with an instructor, they would go over the concepts taught in the class they missed. To be eligible for a session, the actor must notify the office prior to the specific class with one of the applicable reasons: illness, on set, at an audition, out of town, or prior commitment. Our thought behind it: Just because you can't make it to an in-room audition, you can still throw your hat in the ring by sending in a self-tape!
    *Not applicable for some classes.*
